Syria says US 'interfering' as ambassador visits Hama

Syria has accused the US of "interfering" in its affairs after the US ambassador to the country travelled to the flashpoint city of Hama. tiffany jewelry outlet The Syrian foreign ministry said the visit by Robert Ford was "obvious proof" of US involvement in continuing protests in the country. Earlier, the US State Department said Mr Ford's visit was to show solidarity with protesters. Hundreds of Hama residents have fled fearing an assault by security forces. Tanks are stationed outside the city and at least 22 people have been shot dead in recent days. Pandora Bracelet Charms Washington says Mr Ford hopes to stay in Hama for anti-government protests which normally follow Friday prayers. The BBC's Kim Ghattas in Washington says the ambassador's presence in Hama could dissuade Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from launching an all-out assault on the city. But the move has angered Damascus. "The presence of the US ambassador in Hama without previous permission is obvious proof of the implication of the United States in the ongoing events, and of their attempts to increase (tensions), which damage Syria's security and stability," the foreign ministry said in a statement. tiffany rings sale Last Friday's protest in Hama was one of the largest in three months of demonstrations across Syria. A day later, Mr Assad sacked local governor Ahmad Khaled Abdel Aziz for reportedly failing to suppress the unrest. Security forces swept in on Monday in an attempt to regain control of the city, but tanks have so far remained outside. On Thursday, residents blocked streets with burning tyres in attempts to keep out bus-loads of security forces, witnesses said. Dozens of families were said to be fleeing the city. cheap tiffany and co US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Washington was "greatly concerned about the situation in Hama". "The fundamental intention (of Mr Ford's visit) was to make absolutely clear with his physical presence that we stand with those Syrians who are expressing their right to speak for change," she said. The Obama administration has been criticised for not reacting strongly enough to the crackdown in Syria. Washington has warned President Assad that he is running out of time to reform but has yet to call on him to step down. Opposition activists say that more than 1,300 protesters have died across the country since protests began in March. tiffany and co outlet In 1982, Hama was the scene of the ruthless suppression of an uprising against President Assad's father.

Dead soldiers' families 'hacked by newspaper'

Phones owned by relatives of dead UK soldiers were allegedly hacked by the News of the World, a national newspaper reports. tiffany and co outlet The Daily Telegraph claims the phone numbers of relatives of dead service personnel were found in the files of private investigator Glenn Mulcaire. This comes after Prime Minister David Cameron said he would set up a public inquiry into alleged phone hacking. Rupert Murdoch, the paper's owner, has called claims of hacking "deplorable". News International said it would be "absolutely appalled and horrified" if there was any truth in the allegations relating to families of dead soldiers and it would be immediately contacting the Ministry of Defence. Pandora Charms Bracelets A spokesman for the company said: "News International's record as a friend of the armed services and of our servicemen and servicewomen, is impeccable. "Our titles have campaigned in support of the military over many years and will continue to do so. If these allegations are true we are absolutely appalled and horrified. We will be contacting the MoD immediately to try and verify the situation." 'Disgusted' Rose Gentle, the mother of fusilier Gordon Gentle, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Basra in 2004, told the BBC she was "totally disgusted" by the "shocking" allegations. tiffany rings on sale She said there was a "lot of anger" among families and many were left wondering if their names were on a list of people whose phones were hacked. "The police should be contacting families straight away and putting them out of their misery. "I'd never buy that paper again, if this is true, they need to be brought to justice for this, they need to pay for this," she said. MPH Solicitors - whose clients include Samantha Roberts, widow of one of the first Britons killed in Iraq in 2003 - said the firm was contacted by media on Wednesday morning about possible phone-hacking. "We are making efforts to verify this information," a statement said. cheap tiffany Col Richard Kemp, former commander of British forces in Afghanistan, told the BBC when he heard about the allegations he was "absolutely speechless with anger". "If these allegations are true the thing that makes it most shocking is that this newspaper, the News of the World, and its sister paper the Sun, have been so incredibly staunch in their support for British soldiers and British forces," he said. Conservative MP Patrick Mercer, who served in Northern Ireland in the British Army, told the BBC the accusations were "very damaging" and would add to families' devastation of losing a loved one. tiffany jewelry outlet "The idea that the death of their son or whatever is going to be the subject of a sordid investigation by journalists, who are at the end of the day hoping to make monetary profit out of it, is deeply unpalatable and will only add to the grief," he said. An MoD spokesman said: "This is a matter for the Metropolitan Police who are investigating these allegations. "It would be inappropriate for us to comment whilst this investigation is ongoing." 'Deplorable and unacceptable' tiffany & co outlet Earlier, Mr Murdoch, the chairman of News Corporation, News International's parent company, commented on allegations of phone hacking at the News of the World. He said: "Recent allegations of phone hacking and making payments to police with respect to the News of the World are deplorable and unacceptable." In a statement, he added: "I have made clear that our company must fully and proactively co-operate with the police in all investigations and that is exactly what News International has been doing and will continue to do under Rebekah Brooks's leadership. "We are committed to addressing these issues fully and have taken a number of important steps to prevent them from happening again." Cheap Pandora Jewelry Meanwhile, Scotland Yard has told George Osborne that his name and home phone number appeared on notes kept by Mulcaire and former News of the World reporter Clive Goodman, a spokesman for the chancellor said. UNHCR in Somalia 'human tragedy' warning

The levels of malnutrition among children fleeing Somalia's drought could lead to a "human tragedy of unimaginable proportions", the UN refugee head Antonio Guterres has said. tiffany earrings Young children are dying on their way to or within a day of arrival at camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, the UNHCR says. It estimates that a quarter of Somalis are either displaced within the country or living outside as refugees. The drought is compounded by the violence in south and central Somalia. The warning comes as the UK aid agencies Oxfam, Save the Children, and the Red Cross launch emergency appeals in response to the food crisis which is affecting more than 12 million people in the Horn of Africa. The agencies are collectively asking for nearly $150m (£93m). Pandora Bracelet Charms The UNHCR says the need for food, shelter, health services and other life saving aid is urgent and massive. New camp opened According the UN refugee agency, more than 50% of Somali children arriving in Ethiopia are seriously malnourished. In Kenya that figure is between 30% and 40%. "What is the most tragic for us to witness, is that there are children who do arrive in such a weakened state that despite our emergency care and therapeutic feeding, they're dying within 24 hours," UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told a press briefing in Geneva. tiffany rings sale "We estimate that one quarter of Somalia's 7.5 million people are now either internally displaced or are living outside the country as refugees," she said. The UNHCR recently opened a third camp in south-eastern Ethiopia, which is quickly reaching its capacity of 20,000, and is now planning further camps. A relief plane chartered by the agency is flying to Addis Ababa on Tuesday and a convoy of 20 trucks carrying tents and other aid is on its way as well. In north-east Kenya's Dadaab refugee camp, some 1,400 refugees are arriving every day. cheap tiffany and co jewelry Ms Fleming said there was no sign of the exodus of Somalis ending. "The relentless violence that's compounded by a terrible drought has forced more than 135,000 Somalis to flee Somalia so far this year," she said. "In June alone, 54,000 people fled across the two borders, and that is three times the number [of people who fled] in May. So this is a huge spike." Somalia has been racked by constant war for more than 20 years - its last functioning national government was toppled in 1991. tiffany and co outlet

Wimbledon 2011: Novak Djokovic beats Rafael Nadal in final

Serbia's Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title and proved himself the best player in the world with a stunning win over Rafael Nadal. tiffany & co outlet Djokovic came through 6-4 6-1 1-6 6-3 to end Nadal's reign as Wimbledon champion, before overtaking the Spaniard as world number one on Monday. It was his 50th win in 51 matches and his fifth win over Nadal this year. He becomes the first Serbian man to win Wimbledon, his third Grand Slam title after two Australian Open victories. Djokovic had done enough before Sunday's final to guarantee himself the top ranking on Monday no matter what the result. He came into the match having beaten the Spaniard in four finals already this year, but Nadal - on a 20-match winning streak at the All England Club - was still favoured by many to claim a third Wimbledon title as he had won all five Grand Slam meetings with Djokovic. Cheap Pandora Jewelry That record felt like ancient history as the Djokovic of 2011 overcame a slightly edgy start to take a stranglehold on the match. In a desperately tight opening set, the pace and accuracy of the Serbian's groundstrokes began to draw errors from the usually faultless Nadal and earned him the first break point of the day at 5-4. A Nadal forehand into the net gave Djokovic the set and the Spaniard appeared rattled, firing a smash over the baseline in a rare moment of promise at 30-30 at the start of the third. Djokovic, brimming with energy and confidence, needed little encouragement and came haring in to chase down a drop shot in the next game, angling away the backhand to break before turning to his supporters to celebrate. cheap tiffany rings What followed was a breathtaking set that flew by as the Serbian fired 13 winners in what must rank among the best passages of play seen on Centre Court. Nadal was in desperate trouble and needed a lifeline, which was handed to him when Djokovic played backhand into the net in the third to slip behind. The champion grabbed the initiative, powering through a 6-1 set of his own and threatening a real comeback with a thumping forehand that made it 30-40 at the start of the fourth. It was Djokovic who now had to change the momentum of the match and he saw off the danger with a forehand that Nadal just failed to return down the line. cheap tiffany and co The Nadal storm had passed for now and Djokovic sensed it, stealing into the net to play a beautiful drop volley and then forcing an error with some superb, deep groundstrokes to move 2-0 clear. Victory was within sight for the Serbian but the match was quickly back in the balance in the cruellest of manners, when a Nadal return on break point clipped the net and rolled over. The contest remained on a knife-edge but Nadal was always flirting with danger having dropped two sets, and a poor game at 4-3 down saw him broken to 15 and gave Djokovic the chance to serve for the title he had described beforehand as "a dream". A very nervous forehand was hardly the way Djokovic would have chosen to start but two Nadal errors helped him out, and a brave serve volley at 30-30 brought up championship point. tiffany outlet Djokovic moved forward behind a heavy forehand and fell backwards onto the Centre Court turf in celebration as Nadal's desperate backhand flew long to give him the title. "It's really hard to describe this with any words except as the best day of my life, the most special day of my life," said Djokovic, who was so overcome with emotion that he knelt down and ate some of the Centre Court grass. "This is my favourite tournament, the tournament I always dreamed of winning, the first tournament I ever watched in my life. I think I'm still sleeping, I'm still having my dream. "When you're playing the best player in the world, Rafael Nadal, who has won two out of the last three Wimbledons and he has always been winning the big matches against me in the Grand Slams, I had to be on the top of my game, I had to play my best. cheap tiffany and co jewelry "I think I played probably my best match on the grass courts ever."

Ex-IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn freed without bail

tiffany jewelry outlet Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been released from house arrest and had his $6m (£3.7m) cash bail and bond returned amid doubts over the credibility of his accuser. Prosecutors have agreed that Mr Strauss-Kahn should be freed "on his own recognisance", meaning he must simply promise to appear in court. He is accused of sexually assaulting a maid in a New York hotel on 14 May. The case is now close to collapse, US media reports say. The 62-year-old French politician - who had been seen as a leading candidate for the French presidency - appeared in court in New York on Friday over the sexual assault case. 'Substantial change' cheap tiffany and co After assessing disclosures by prosecutors from the office of the Manhattan district attorney, a judge rescinded the strict bail terms imposed on Mr Strauss-Kahn, but did order that his passport be retained so he could not travel outside the US. In a letter submitted to the court prosecutors said that the maid gave false testimony to a grand jury, omitting the fact that she cleaned another room before alerting a supervisor to her claims of sexual assault. "I understand that the circumstances of this case have changed substantially, and I agree the risk that he would not be here has receded quite a bit. I release Mr Strauss-Kahn at his own recognisance," Justice Michael Obus told the court on Friday. Cheap Pandora Jewelry "In the meantime there will be no rush to judgment on this case," Mr Obus said. On the court steps, opposing lawyers each maintained their case. "I want to remind all of you that at each appearance in the last six weeks, we asked you and asked the world not to rush to judgement - now I think you can understand why," said Mr Strauss-Kahn's lawyer, William Taylor. "We believe the next step will lead to the complete dismissal of the charges," he added. tiffany and co outlet After Friday's hearing, Mr Strauss-Kahn strode out of court smiling, with his wife on his arm. In earlier court hearings, prosecutors had spoken of the strength of their case. One attorney said the proof against him was "substantial". Now prosecutors believe she may have lied under questioning and could have links to drug dealers and money-laundering. Mr Thompson said that though the maid "may have made some mistakes", that does not mean the assault never occurred. Following the twists to the sexual assault case on Friday, hopes among some have been raised about the possibility Mr Strauss-Kahn may once again be able to compete with Nicolas Sarkozy for the French presidency in 2012. cheap tiffany rings The Socialist former Prime Minister, Lionel Jospin, said: "It's a thunderbolt - but in the opposite direction this time." But it was too soon to say whether Mr Strauss-Kahn might stand, he added. "If we hypothesise that Dominique is cleared of all suspicion and all charges, which I obviously hope will happen, then it will be first down to him to decide... and then it will be down to the Socialists to decide." "It's too early to transform into politics what is so far a human drama which is developing before our eyes." tiffany outlet Mr Strauss-Kahn had been under house arrest in a New York apartment since posting a $6m (£3.7m) cash bail and bond in May. He is charged with seven counts including four more serious felony charges - two of criminal sexual acts, one of attempted rape and one of sexual abuse - plus three misdemeanour offences, including unlawful imprisonment. Mr Strauss-Kahn, who resigned as head of the International Monetary Fund to defend himself, vigorously denies the charges.
