Hariri murder: UN tribunal issues arrest warrants

Four arrest warrants have been issued by the UN-backed tribunal investigating the 2005 murder of Lebanon's former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the court said. tiffany and co outlet Hariri's son, Saad, welcomed the indictments and described them as a "historic moment" for Lebanon. Local reports say the warrants name senior members of the Shia militant and political group Hezbollah. Hezbollah has repeatedly denounced the tribunal and vowed to retaliate. Divisions over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), based in The Hague, have thrown the country into political turmoil and prompted fears of sectarian unrest. 'Innocent until proven guilty' cheap tiffany Rafik Hariri and 22 others were killed in February 2005 in central Beirut when a huge bomb went off as his motorcade passed by. On Thursday, Lebanon's state prosecutor Saeed Mirza said he had received the indictments and four arrest warrants from an STL delegation in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The STL later confirmed the indictment, stating that the judge "is satisfied that there is prima facie evidence for this case to proceed to trial". It added that it would not reveal the identities of those named in the indictment. Pandora Charms Bracelets "Judge Fransen has ruled that the indictment shall remain confidential in order to assist the Lebanese authorities in fulfilling their obligations to arrest the accused," the statement reads. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said his government would deal "responsibly and realistically" with the indictment, while "bearing in mind that these are accusations and not verdicts". "All suspects are innocent until proven guilty," Mr Mikati told a news conference. But the BBC's Owen Bennett-Jones in Beirut says the new prime minister is in a difficult position. tiffany jewelry outlet With Hezbollah now a strong force in the new Lebanese government, it is difficult to see how any arrests could be made, our correspondent says. In a policy statement, the government said it would "follow the progress of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon... as long as it does not negatively affect Lebanon's stability and civil peace." Officials from Hezbollah declined to comment, but the group's al-Manar television described the indictment as "politicised". Hezbollah has denied always any role in the assassination. The group claims the tribunal is a plot involving the United States, Israel and France, and the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has threatened to cut the hand of anyone who tries to arrest Hezbollah members. tiffany rings on sale Saad Hariri - himself a former prime minister - described the indictment over his father's case as a milestone for the country. "After many years of patience, of struggle... today, we witness a historic moment in Lebanese politics, justice and security," he said. He urged Lebanon's new Hezbollah-dominated government to live up to its international obligations. Hezbollah forced the collapse of Saad Hariri's government in January after he refused to stop co-operating with the tribunal. tiffany outlet Mr Mikati has previously said that he would strive to uphold Lebanon's international obligations, but that he was also mindful of his responsibilities when it came to the country's stability. According to tribunal officials, Lebanon now has 30 days to serve out the arrest warrants. If the suspects are not arrested within that period, the STL will then make public the indictment and summon the suspects to appear before the court.

Greece crisis: EU welcomes Greek MPs' austerity vote

The European Union has welcomed the Greek parliament's vote in favour of a severe austerity package that has sparked strikes and violent protests. tiffany and co outlet The EU said the move was a vital step back from what it called the "very grave scenario of default". Greek MPs approved the deeply unpopular package of spending cuts and tax hikes by 155 votes to 138. The country is heavily in debt and the measures are needed to win the latest tranche of a 110bn-euro (£98bn) loan. Greek MPs are to hold a second vote on Thursday on a bill outlining how the the austerity package is to be implemented. Wavering support cheap tiffany Wednesday's vote prompted a furious response from protesters in Athens. Demonstrators gathered outside parliament on the second of a two-day strike. Sporadic violent clashes were continuing in the capital in the early hours of Thursday between masked protesters - armed with rocks and sticks - and riot police firing tear gas and stun grenades. Despite the unrest, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy welcomed the result as a "vote of national responsibility" paving the way for a second aid package. "The country has taken an important step forward along the necessary path of fiscal consolidation and growth-enhancing structural reform," they said in a joint statement Pandora Charms Bracelets. Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany - Greece's biggest creditor - said the vote was "really good news", and important for the stability of the euro as a whole. The package of tax rises and budget cuts - worth about 28bn euros over five years - had been championed by Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou. Had it been rejected, Greece could have run out of money within weeks. The EU and the International Monetary Fund have demanded that the measures are implemented before they extend further loans to Greece. Mr Papandreou had faced wavering support from within his governing Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) which has a slim majority, with just 155 seats out of 300 in parliament. tiffany jewelry outlet But in the end, only one Pasok deputy voted against the package. There were two abstentions, while five deputies merely noted they were present. Once news that the vote had passed trickled out to Syntagma Square outside parliament, fighting broke out with a new level of brutality, says the BBC's Malcolm Brabant in the Greek capital. The riot police engaged in behaviour that would never be tolerated in other parts of Europe, throwing stones back at the protesters, says our correspondent. Protesters set fire to a post office on the ground floor of the finance ministry in the square. Dozens of police and protesters were injured in the violence. tiffany rings on sale Greek unions are angry that the government's austerity programme will impose taxes on those earning the minimum wage, following months of other cuts that have seen unemployment rise to more than 16%. Once passed, European officials will start to finalise the details of a second bail-out, worth an estimated 120bn euros, designed to help Greece pay its debts until the end of 2014.

Thailand's PM Abhisit warns against Thaksin return

Abhisit Vejjajiva told the BBC that the next government should not "put one man's interest before the country's. It brings instability." But in another BBC interview Mr Thaksin said he was "useful" to Thailand. Thais go to to polls on 3 July in what is expected to be a close contest. Since Mr Thaksin's ouster in a military coup five years ago, Thailand has been convulsed by political turbulence, largely focussed around those who love him and those who hate him, says the BBC's South East Asia correspondent Rachel Harvey. Just over a year ago more than 90 people died in anti-government protests. Cheap Pandora Jewelry Some opinion polls suggest Mr Abhisit's Democrat Party is trailing behind the main opposition Pheu Thai party - led by Mr Thaksin's younger sister Yingluck and, critics say, effectively controlled by from exile by Mr Thaksin himself. "I give advice, I write the policy, because I have more experience that anyone else in the party, so I give advice to them," Mr Thaksin told our correspondent when she travelled to meet him in Dubai, where he is living in order to avoid a prison sentence for corruption. He said he did not see why that should make his critics nervous. "Why so nervous? I'm useful to the country," Mr Thaksin said. tiffany outlet Mr Thaksin's opponents, including the incumbent prime minister, would strenuously refute that, our correspondent says. 'Incitement' They fear that if the opposition comes to power, Mr Thaksin will be absolved of all past misdemeanours under an amnesty and return home triumphant. In an interview with the BBC's HARDtalk programme, Mr Abhisit said Mr Thaksin had been "responsible for inciting the red-shirts" - opposition supporters involved in last year's deadly clashes with the military. He said the opposition were campaigning on their connections with Mr Thaksin but urged the election winner not to "put Thaksin's interest before the people's and the country's" cheap tiffany rings. He insisted the decision of the Thai people would be respected, whoever won. "It's for the Thai people to decide and come 3 July they will make that decision and we will all respect that decision - and I urge the red-shirts to do the same," Mr Abhisit said. tiffany & co outlet

Taliban say husband and wife in Pakistan suicide attack

A husband and wife carried out a suicide attack that killed eight people at a police station in north-western Pakistan, the Taliban has said. tiffany accessories The attack took place late on Saturday in Kolachi, near the tribal region and Taliban stronghold of South Waziristan. The pair entered the police station dressed in burkas, hiding rifles, hand grenades and suicide vests underneath. They held staff hostage for several hours before detonating themselves, killing seven officers and a tea boy. The pair pretended that they had a complaint to make when they initially entered the station before removing their burkas and launching an assault. Cheap Pandora Charms 'Different strategies' The BBC's Orla Guerin, in Islamabad, says that the use of a husband and wife suicide squad by the Pakistani Taliban is a new tactic, and a new threat. Already, our correspondent adds, the militants have resorted to using children as human bombs. And a suicide attack in Pakistan's tribal areas last December was blamed on a woman bomber.
